The Daytona 500
Called the Granddaddy of them all and the Super Bowl of stock car racing, the Daytona 500 is one of the biggest and most prestigious races in the world of motorsports. Taking place annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the spectacular race draws fans from all over the world. As the sport’s biggest, most distinguished race of the year, the 500 kicks off the NASCAR Cup Series season with 200 laps around the 2.5-mile oval track for a total of 500 miles.
Taking place yearly since 1959, the race wasn’t always run on the paved oval track. The first Daytona 500 was actually run on the hard-packed white sandy beach of Daytona Beach, Florida, and a section of paved road that made up a 4.1-mile course. The beach's tides and rough sandy surface caused challenges to the cars and drivers. As a result, the race had to be timed to coincide with low tide, thus making the course unpredictable with drivers having to dodge large bumps and ruts.
Despite these difficulties, the Daytona 500 on the beach was a resounding success, establishing NASCAR as a major sport drawing huge crowds of fans. As the sport grew in popularity, it became clear that a permanent track was needed, leading Bill France, Sr., the founder of NASCAR, to build the Daytona International Speedway. While the beach course is no longer used, the Daytona 500 continues to be one of the most prestigious and highly anticipated events in the world of racing.
Over the years after the completion of the track in 1959, the 500 has become a major event watched by millions of people around the world. The race has seen many legendary drivers compete, including Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Mario Andretti (the only driver to win the Daytona 500 (1967) and the Indianapolis 500 (1969), and Richard Petty who has the most Daytona 500 wins (7).
The Daytona 500 is not just about the race itself, but is the final race in a week of races called SpeedWeek, which celebrates the opening of the NASCAR season. SpeedWeek is an action-packed schedule of races across several racing series filled with nonstop action, fan excitement, events, festivities, concerts, car shows, and autograph sessions with drivers. Fans can also attend practice and qualifying sessions to get a closer look at the cars and drivers.
On race day Sunday, the atmosphere is electric with anticipation of speed and competition as each driver has a chance to have their name permanently inscribed on the Harley J. Earl trophy awarded to the winner of the 500. As the biggest, most prestigious race of the year, winners are enshrined in racing lore, motorsports history, and greatness forever. Before the most famous words in motorsports are spoken, “Drivers, start your engines!”, fans pack the stands, wearing their favorite driver's colors and waving flags. The pre-race ceremony is a spectacle in itself, with a parade of drivers and celebrities, the singing of the national anthem, and the flyover of military aircraft.
When the green flag waives it’s non-stop racing action as drivers draft each other, partner with teammates, and jockey for position as teams push their cars to the limit. At a steep 31° angle, the Daytona International Speedway is known for its steep banking, which allows drivers to take turns at high speeds. This makes for a thrilling race, with plenty of lead changes and close finishes. Upon crossing the finish line, the winner is taken to Victory Lane after doing some celebratory donuts and burnouts made popular by Dale Earnhardt spinning out the in the grass infield after he won.
If you go to the race, be sure to run down to the fence right before the pack passes, grab hold of the fence and feel the force of the cars rushing by at almost 200 mph. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
Daytona Beach Bike Week
As most riders know, if you're a motorcycle enthusiast looking for an incredible time, Daytona Beach is the place to be! Each year, more than 400,000 bikers from all over the country come together to celebrate one of life's greatest freedoms, riding (which is good for the soul), during the four-day Daytona Bike Week rally. With beautiful Florida weather and miles of oceanside rides along famous A1A, historic Main Street, the intercoastal waterway, or the scenic Loop, it's no wonder why this event is so popular.

Volusia County, the beginning of the Space Coast
Beginning in Volusia County Florida, the Space Coast is a famous coastal region on the East Coast of Florida where America’s storied space program is located. Housing the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, it got its name from the rockets that were launched from there into space. The Space Coast has a rich history of space exploration and was the site of the historic Apollo 11 launch in 1969, which attracted a staggering 750,000 to 900,000 people. Daytona to Cape Canaveral is a little over an hour’s drive, and although beginning in Volusia County, it's mainly situated a little further south in Brevard County, close to the Atlantic Ocean.

Those aged 65 or over account for 25% of the area's population of 658,961 residents, which includes all of Volusia and Flagler counties.

The Homestead Exemption lets you qualify for up to $50,000 in tax exemptions by decreasing the taxable value of your home. And the “Save Our Home” cap helps limit the annual increases to the assessed value of your property to 3% or the change in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lowest. These two tax benefits are of high value as inflation drives prices upward.
No Estate Tax
An additional tax benefit is that there is no estate or “death tax” charged on the transfer of the estate or any assets of a person who dies. This is a big benefit to the loved ones inheriting the estate by shielding them from an additional tax burden.
